Janda situps: Proper form?

I don't know if I'm doing the Janda sit-ups correctly.

I just recently started doing them with a partner and it seems like whenever I push against my partner's hands (behind my calves), the front of my thighs tense up too. I was under the impression that you are not supposed to do this during the Janda sit-up. I know the hip flexors should be relaxed, but does that mean the whole front of the thigh (quadriceps) should also be relaxed and soft?

If so, how do you make sure you're doing this right? I'd like to eventually own an Ab Pavelizer but I can't afford it right now. So I figured since I have a workout partner I should be able to do perfect Janda sit-ups.

Any suggestions?
